The Right Steps Make All the Difference
Lost or Found a Pet in Montgomery County, MD?
Losing a pet is frightening, and finding one can feel overwhelming. Whether you are searching for your own animal or trying to help one you have found, taking the right steps quickly can make all the difference.
The steps for reporting a lost pet and a found pet are the same — begin here regardless of your situation.
STEP 01
File a Report with Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center
Your first step is to file a report with the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center, located in Derwood. This is the most important action you can take and should be done as soon as possible.
Visit their lost and found page for report forms and additional guidance.
STEP 02
Post on Social MediA
Montgomery County Lost and Found Pets Facebook Page is an active community page that connects thousands of local residents and is one of the most effective tools for reuniting lost pets with their families. Post as soon as possible with a clear photo and description of the animal and where it was last seen or found.
Other sites to consider for getting the word out: Local Facebook community pages, Craigslist, NextDoor, or Local HOA communities (if applicable).
STEP 03
Contact Your Microchip Company
Or get a found pet scanned for a Microchip at a local vet or shelter.
If your pet is microchipped, contact the microchip registry immediately to report them as lost. Make sure your contact information on file is current so you can be reached if your pet is found and scanned.
